<image:title>News-Events - Meet NAASC Member Wolfgang Busch… - What do you think a major yet unanswered question in the plant sciences is?</image:title>
<image:caption>Wolfgang: One major open question is how plants coordinate their growth and development to become the highly integrated and robust systems that they are. Specifically, we still do not fully understand whether plants possess an internal representation or overarching organizational framework to guide organ patterning and developmental decisions. It could be analogous in some ways to the neuron-based systems found in animals. If you were to start your professional journey today (imagine yourself as a brand-new graduate student), which subfield of plant sciences would you now choose and why? Wolfgang: I would still choose a field with a strong emphasis on genetics. Despite the tremendous progress made, we are still far from fully understanding the complexity of genetic functions and regulatory networks in plants. Genetics remains important and incredibly powerful to uncover how plants grow, adapt, and respond to their environment.</image:caption>

<image:title>News-Events - Meet NAASC Member Wolfgang Busch… - All scientists experience some ups and downs in their careers. Do you recall any moments in your professional life where you doubted your ability to keep going? Wolfgang: I have experienced many challenging moments, from experiments that failed, to grant applications that were not funded, to review comments that felt unfair. These setbacks are inevitable parts of doing science. However, for me, these discouragements never last long. With time, things do get easier, especially when you learn to step back, take a breath, refocus on science itself.</image:title>
<image:caption>Many plant scientists today struggle with getting their project ideas funded. Do you have any advice on getting funding for Arabidopsis research, especially in today’s highly competitive climate? Wolfgang: It varies from country to country, but a few principles apply broadly. First, stay open to diverse opportunities and think creatively about where your research interests fit. For example, agencies such as the NIH can also support plant research when the questions align with their mission. It is crucial to clearly state how fundamental discoveries in Arabidopsis connect to the broader goals and priorities of the funding agency. Here’s a relevant perspective article that I coauthored with several NAASC members and others in the community: Friesner et al., Plant Cell (2025). For international collaborative grants, the environment can be more challenging, but collaboration remains powerful. If you want to go far, go together! Building strong partnerships can open doors to additional funding avenues.</image:caption>

<image:title>News-Events - Meet NAASC Member Wolfgang Busch… - What do you think are the top 1-3 barriers for the next generation making a career in plant biology, and do you have any thoughts on how to overcome them? Wolfgang: One major challenge is making plant research more compelling and clearly communicating its significance to the next generation. Much of this comes down to storytelling capacity. A second barrier is the availability of stable and sufficient funding to support young scientists. Ensuring that early-career researchers have the resources they need is essential.</image:title>
<image:caption>When you hire into your own lab, what are you looking for in a prospective employee? Wolfgang: I look for a strong track record of accomplishments. It shows the great passion for science and the drive to complete projects. I value candidates who deeply understand their own research and don’t remain at the surface. Another essential factor is fit within the lab environment. I am very proud of the supportive and collaborative community in my current group.</image:caption>

<image:title>News-Events - A Journey to Become an Assistant Professor - A Typical Timeline: Application to Selection: In my experience, the academic job cycle typically starts from late August of one year till May of the next. While each institution moves at its own pace, the process generally follows several major phases: Job announcement and application submission (August–early December, Year 1). While there are often out-of-cycle postings, the majority of R1 positions are advertised in this timeframe. Application screening (November, Year 1–January, Year 2): After the application deadline, committees begin screening submissions and develop a preliminary short list. Some institutions invite candidates directly to on-site interviews, but these days, most conduct a Zoom interview as a first step. These virtual interviews serve as a critical initial round of screening. On-site interviews (Late January–March, Year 2): Usually 3–6 candidates move forward to this stage, which can vary widely by institution. Some host all candidates together in a symposium-style format, while others prefer individual visits, often one person per week. Final decision and second visit (March–April, Year 2): After on-site interviews conclude, the search committee identifies their top candidates. Offers are usually made sequentially in order of preference. The top candidate is typically invited for a second on-site visit that is focused on recruitment.</image:title>

<image:title>News-Events - A Journey to Become an Assistant Professor - Organizing Information for the Job Search: Staying organized is essential, especially if you are juggling multiple applications and deadlines. There are several ways to identify open faculty positions: Online Platforms: Websites like Science Careers, Nature Careers, and Google Careers regularly post faculty openings across disciplines. These are publicly accessible and easy to filter by field and location. Word of Mouth: Search committees often share job advertisements through their personal networks. Mentors, advisors, collaborators, and colleagues can be great sources of information. Direct Invitations: In some cases, search committees may reach out to you directly if they feel your work aligns well with their department’s priorities. These invitations typically come from people already familiar with your research. Community Channels: Slack groups (https://futurepislack.wordpress.com/) and other job-application working groups are also valuable. Many of these communities share postings quickly and keep each other updated throughout the job cycle.</image:title>
<image:caption>Tip #1: Attend conferences and workshops during the summer leading into the job market cycle, especially if you have opportunities to give oral presentations. These events may help to showcase your work and inform the community that you are entering the job market. Tip #2: Create a job-tracking spreadsheet, including deadlines, required materials, and status updates. This simple organization is extremely helpful as you start managing multiple applications.</image:caption>

<image:title>News-Events - A Journey to Become an Assistant Professor - Zoom Interview: Zoom interviews vary widely depending on search committee preferences, but most follow a recognizable structure. Here are a few formats I personally encountered: Regardless of format, Zoom interviews move quickly and are designed to assess clarity of communication, fit with the department, and enthusiasm for the position. Common Question List: Briefly introduce yourself What are your research accomplishment? What are your future research plans? Tell us one key/central question specific to your field. How do you fit with our department/why do you want to join us? What is the biggest conflict/trouble you have ever been involved in at work? Do you have any questions for us?</image:title>
<image:caption>Tip #6: Practicing your presentation is key! It helps if you practice in front of a mirror or with a colleague or family member face to face, or even record yourself (e.g., via Zoom's record function) Tip #7: Don’t underestimate the value of your questions. The final few minutes are an important opportunity to show you’ve done your homework and express your enthusiasm for the position.</image:caption>

<image:title>News-Events - A Journey to Become an Assistant Professor - On-site interview: I encountered two major formats during on-site interviews: Symposium-style and Individual (personal) interviews. In the symposium-style format, you visit campus with other candidates and can attend each other’s seminars. In the individual format, you are the sole interviewee during your visit. Personally, I preferred the individual format because it allowed for a more focused schedule. Regardless of format, on-site interviews typically include the following components: One-on-one Faculty Meetings: You meet individually with many faculty members, including future colleagues, the department chair, and sometimes the dean. Research Seminar: A 40–50-minute formal seminar followed by 10–20 minutes of Q&A. This is your opportunity to showcase your research and scientific vision. Chalk Talk: A 1–1.5-hour session, without slides, dedicated to your future research program and sometimes also your teaching/mentoring plans. The session is very interactive, and the audience may interrupt at any point with questions. Meals: Lunch is often with trainees (graduate students and postdocs). Dinner is commonly with faculty members. Both offer important opportunities to learn about the department’s atmosphere and culture. Core Facility Tours: You may visit imaging centers, genomics facilities, greenhouses, or other campus resources relevant to your work.</image:title>
<image:caption>Tip #8: Before your visit, you should receive a list of faculty you’ll meet. Review their recent publications and websites so you can hold engaging conversations. Tip #9: For the chalk talk, prepare multiple versions (2-, 5-, 10-, and 15-minute outlines for each project) so you can adapt depending on time and interruptions. It is normal not to finish the full chalk talk. The goal is to communicate your ideas clearly while engaging with their questions.</image:caption>

<image:title>News-Events - A Journey to Become an Assistant Professor - 2nd visit: Congratulations! Reaching this stage usually means you have received an offer for the position. At this point, the department is now focused on recruiting you. The visit is designed to help everyone confirm that this is a good match. A second visit typically includes: Individual Meetings with Faculty: These conversations help you and your future colleagues clarify expectations and potential collaborations. Meetings with Core Facility Staff: You’ll learn how the institution’s technical platforms operate and explore in detail how they could serve your research needs. Meals and Informal Interactions: These more relaxing conversations with faculty members allow you to get a better feeling for the collegial environment. Local Living & Community Exploration: This may include a guided tour of the local area, often with a real estate agent, to help you understand housing options, commute patterns, schools, and community life. Negotiation: Negotiations typically occur between you and the department chair or the college dean both in person and through emails. In most cases, you will be asked to submit a start-up wish list first. The department will then respond with what can be provided directly and what may require alternative solutions. For the negotiation, think carefully about your future life, both in the department and in the local community. Consider the following: Research Needs: What essential equipment, spaces, or services are required for your day-to-day research? Are there shared facilities that can meet some needs? Teaching Expectations: What is the typical teaching load for this position? Course assignment. Expected class sizes. TA support. When you have to start teaching? Mentoring & Lab Personnel: Salary expectations and funding models for postdocs and technicians. Details of the graduate program (rotations, direct admission, timelines). Guaranteed funding for graduate students (fellowships, TAs). Personal/family financial support: Your annual salary. Availability of summer salary support. Whether spousal/partner hiring programs exist. Availability of loans for house purchases. Relocation expenses. Timeline & Tenure Clock: Official start date. Tenure-clock policies and possibilities for extensions (e.g., parental leave). Bridge funding or early-arrival arrangements (if needed).</image:title>
<image:caption>The key thing is to communicate your needs clearly and concretely, which I feel I did not do well in my own negotiations. For example: “If A, B, and C can be provided, I will be delighted to join your department.” Once both sides reach an agreement, you will sign the final offer letter. Congratulations again, you are officially a tenure-track Assistant Professor! Tip #10: At this stage, it is always beneficial to reach out to others, including peers who have gone through or are currently going through the process, trusted advisors (from graduate school and postdoctoral training), or a supportive group, for negotiation templates, practical suggestions, and mental support.</image:caption>

<image:title>News-Events - Three scientists recognized for their extraordinary & positive impacts on the Arabidopsis Community - Later Career Category: Dr. Joanna Friesner, NAASC, USA</image:title>
<image:caption>Quotes about Joanna from her supporters: I would argue that no one in the country, and possibly the entire world, has done as much service as Joanna in support of the Arabidopsis community. Joanna’s work has become a model for inclusive conference planning, from session co-creation to speaker selection grounded in global & demographic representation. She has built a system that is sustainable, evidence-based, and now widely emulated. Her visionary efforts have not only shaped ICAR but have also set a new benchmark for inclusivity in scientific conferences, inspiring a more equitable future for the plant biology community. Her co-founding of the Inclusivity Scholars Program (ISP) and the ISP Cohort Model reflects both her commitment and her methodical approach to building community impact. . . Through it, Dr. Friesner has cultivated a deeply supportive and affirming environment that helps scholars not only participate in the Arabidopsis community but fully see themselves as belonging within it. Her work has secured over two decades of sustained support for Arabidopsis community-based initiatives, directly funding participation by early career scientists, international attendees, and those facing financial and structural barriers. A hallmark of Dr. Friesner’s impact is her ability to implement structural improvements that enhance diversity and representation in Arabidopsis research and more broadly in plant science</image:caption>

<image:title>News-Events - Three world-renowned scientists receive Philip N. Benfey Arabidopsis Community Lifetime Achievement awards - Dr. Mark Estelle, University of California, San Diego, USA</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr. Estelle is most famous for his foundational work in the auxin field including his high-impact collaborative work with Ning Zheng that solved the structure of TIR1 in complex with auxin and an Aux/IAA peptide. Dr. Estelle has been a community leader and a team player- he has organized many meetings and led many plant biology societies; in fact, he is one of only 2 people in NAASC’s 30+ year history to be nominated, elected, AND agree to serve twice (first in 1994 and then in 2008). He has also helped mentor many early career scientists, bringing a voice of calm and collegiality (he is Canadian!) as well as excitement, to plant hormone research. He has been a role model for many current leaders, as one wrote: “Mark’s work and vision has paved the way for an entire generation of active scientists and without doubt for the next to come.” To learn more about Mark, read his ASPB Pioneer award biography to get a sense of his extensive contributions and trademark humble nature. He concludes: As an ASPB “Pioneer’ I think I am expected to provide wise council to young scientists. Because my career has been guided by good luck rather than planning, I am hesitant to offer much in the way of advice. However here are a few, somewhat idiosyncratic thoughts. Be sure to pick an important, challenging, but not intractable problem to study. Be aware of competition but don’t let it distort your work. It is better to be open and collaborative than secretive and distrustful. It’s more fun and will benefit you in the long run. Don’t worry too much about networking if it makes you uncomfortable. If you do good science and publish it, people will notice. When you make an exciting discovery, be sure to celebrate right away, because it will be old news in a month. Finally, be sure to remind yourself why you love science as often as possible. Your motivation will be specific to you. For me, the discovery of something previously unknown to human-kind provides a rush like no other.</image:caption>

<image:title>News-Events - Three world-renowned scientists receive Philip N. Benfey Arabidopsis Community Lifetime Achievement awards - Dr. Maarten Koornneef, retired, formerly of MPI Cologne & Wageningen Univ, The Netherlands</image:title>
<image:caption>Dr. Koornneef is a renowned expert in plant genetics and was a pioneer in the isolation of many of the early Arabidopsis mutants. A supporter wrote “very few people that work on Arabidopsis have never used a mutant that Dr. Koornneef generated.” He isolated early Arabidopsis hormone mutants that were foundational to future research and applied his genetic knowledge to establish early Arabidopsis genetic linkage maps. His vast knowledge of natural variation meant he could spot mutants easily and genotype by eye, which came in handy during mutagenesis suppressor screens. Following early work in the Netherlands he became a founding member of ‘modern Arabidopsis research’ that coalesced in the mid-to-late 1980s after pivotal discussions at US conferences, leading to the Arabidopsis genome sequencing project. Another supporter wrote “In my opinion, Maarten is one of the most important godfathers of Arabidopsis thaliana, making it the major plant model species by providing the international research community with a rich resource of hormone, photoreceptor and early flowering mutants and the first genetic map.” Maarten frequently collaborated with others, and a supporter noted “One of the great things I learned from Maarten is to share and be generous. To share your material, to share your knowledge, your time, your expertise, your equipment, and team up with others to do research that otherwise could not be done. In his career, Maarten has always shared, and always looked for opportunities to collaborate.”</image:caption>

<image:title>News-Events - Three world-renowned scientists receive Philip N. Benfey Arabidopsis Community Lifetime Achievement awards - Dr. Detlef Weigel, Max Planck Institute for Biology, Tübingen, Germany</image:title>
<image:caption>As one supporter noted “Detlef Weigel’s career has profoundly shaped the Arabidopsis research community.” Dr. Weigel pioneered the discovery and use of plant genetic diversity to understand and exploit for the benefit of humanity key principles of many biological processes, from development and immunity to adaptation to climate change. Among many accomplishments and foundational contributions to plant biology, he discovered how mutable and plastic plant genomes are and he demonstrated how genetic diversity translates into phenotypic diversity. During the last two decades, he produced a blueprint for discovering and exploiting genetic variation at scale in any plant species using Arabidopsis as a reference. His group produced the first haplotype map outside of humans, which in turn was key to demonstrating the power of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in plants. Weigel’s group performed the first complete genome resequencing study in any eukaryote, from which the 1001 Genomes Project for Arabidopsis was conceived. This inspired similar projects for a large number of plants, including not only crops, but also many wild keystone species. Equally- if not more important- Detlef Weigel has mentored and trained many (nearly 150 so far) master’s and doctoral students, and postdoctoral scholars. A supporter noted “His dedication to training has enriched the Arabidopsis community with a culture of excellence and collaboration.” These individuals populate university faculty positions, non-profit leadership roles and biotechnology companies around the world. His trainees have had astounding impact and success, and many are now leaders in emerging fields of plant science. Detlef has also been a champion for diversity in science through support of his trainees, leadership roles in the Arabidopsis community, as one of the earliest advocates for open access publication, and as a public figure to communicate broadly in discussions on plant science, publishing, and genetic engineering.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I learnt and observed [that] undergraduates are more inclined to think about their progression term by term [so] a more relevant and realistic approach [is] to set a goal...and clearly lay out a weekly plan for the term. [I]t is helpful to discuss early in the term the student's courseload [and] other factors (e.g., employment or family obligations) ... that are relevant to developing their specific plan. [Considering these] ... you can set the objective or plan with them.</image:caption>

New group leaders are faced with an array of challenges. Many of these challenges are associated with an expansion of responsibilities and expectations as scientists become group leaders. This article aims to provide some guidance for new group leaders on a subset of these challenges. Inspired by questions such as: ‘What does it mean to lead a research program?’, ‘How can we make sustainable investments of our time, energy, and focus?’, and ‘What does it mean to advance knowledge?’, it is a collection insights, best practices, & resources from the workshop.</image:caption>
